Main Capital Partners moves into new headquarters: Plein 1813 – 4 The Hague

  • Press release
Main Capital Partners, a leading private equity firm specializing in enterprise software, is excited to announce the relocation of its corporate headquarters to Plein 1813 – 4, The Hague, effective September 2nd.

This strategic move marks a significant milestone in the firm's growth and commitment to providing strategic guidance and operational support to its portfolio companies and investors. This milestone follows recent geographical expansion and successful closing of Main VIII and Main Foundation II Funds earlier this year.

Historical background of the building

The new headquarters, located in the heart of The Hague, honors its past while embracing the future. This property, with its rich architectural and urban development history, was originally commissioned in 1860 as one of the first four residences on the square, marking a significant milestone in the city’s early urban expansion.

The villa’s architectural evolution underscores its growing prominence over time. Initially constructed as a modest residence, the property was first expanded in 1868 under new ownership, resulting in a more symmetrical facade. The most substantial renovation occurred in 1905, when the villa was extensively remodeled, incorporating a stained-glass skylight, a grand hall, and a conservatory – elements that contribute to its current designation as a high-value monument.

The villa is further distinguished by its historical associations with key figures in Dutch history. From 1942 to 1946, it served as the headquarters for the Ministry of General Warfare of the Dutch Kingdom during a critical period in World War II. Subsequently, it became the official office of the Prime Minister of the Netherlands, including Joop den Uyl, the last Prime Minister to maintain his cabinet within these walls. The building continued to play a vital role in government affairs, later housing the Scientific Council for Government Policy, until its acquisition by the state in 1964.

Recent renovation: create a sustainable, inspiring work environment – anchored in history

In 2016, the Dutch state sold the property, which remained unrenovated due to prohibitive costs and public opposition. Recognizing the villa’s historical and architectural significance, Main Capital – together with a team of specialist partners – started the renovation of the property in 2022, initiating a new chapter in its storied history. This respected villa now serves as the headquarters for Main Capital Partners, harmonizing the preservation of its historical importance with the firm’s forward-looking vision.

During the restoration, the historic aspects of the villa were treated with great respect and precision, including the glass dome, original hardwood floors and ornate ceilings, all combined with modern fixtures.

“We created a sustainable, inspiring work place. Our new headquarters reflects our dedication to both our team and our clients,” said Charly Zwemstra, CEO of Main Capital Partners. “The enhanced resources and central location will enable us to better serve our partners, attract top talent, host industry and community events, and continue driving value creation across our investments. We thank all of our partners during the renovation process for their hard work and impressive result.”
